Comey invited to testify at House Oversight Committee hearing

The Utah Republican heads up the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which is the chamber's lead investigative panel.

Any suggestion former FBI Director Robert Mueller will not carry out a truly independent investigation into Russian meddling in the USA elections or any possible collusion of Trump campaign officials is misplaced, Rep. Jason Chaffetz said.

Gowdy, in his fourth term in the House, is best known for his role overseeing the congressional committee that investigated the 2012 terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Libya. Chaffetz said last month that he would not seek re-election in 2018 and that he was considering leaving office early. And that's the likeliest reason Chaffetz just made himself the face of Congress' investigation into the possible act of obstruction by Trump just a month after giving up on Congress.

Comey had reportedly indicated in a series of memos that Trump asked him to scale back his investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

"We are writing to request that the FBI provide the committee with all such memos, if they exist, that Mr. [James] Comey created memorializing interactions he had with Presidents Trump and Obama and Attorneys General Sessions, Lynch, and Deputy Attorneys General Rosenstein, Boente, and Yates regarding the investigations of Trump associates' alleged connection with Russian Federation or the Clinton email investigation", Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) wrote Wednesday. Today, Gowdy released a statement saying he was talking to other members about the chairmanship.

Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes said Wednesday in a caucus meeting that the Republican Chaffetz is expected to announce his resignation soon and that it would take effect by June 30. He said he hoped to preside over one final hearing on a botched Obama administration "gun-walking" program, in which federal authorities let gun-runners purchase firearms in hopes of disrupting gun smuggling rings.

Chaffetz, a former kicker for the Mormon-owned Brigham Young University football team, was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008.

Chaffetz previously has not ruled out another run for public office at some point in the future. Chaffetz became chairman of the House Oversight Committee in 2015.

"I kind of had a little bit of a midlife crisis".
