Should estimates hold, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will finish the weekend about 50% above the opening of 2014's original "Guardians of the Galaxy", which debuted with $94 million in its first weekend.

Factor in Guardians' international markets, many of which opened last week, and the film is already pushing half-a-billion worldwide, with a global cume of $427.6 million through Sunday.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has beaten both its competitors and (narrowly) its box office expectations with a $145 million opening weekend in the US. Including this weekend's tally, The Fate of the Furious has rung up $207 million domestically. 99% of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 tickets in China were for the 3D version.

New offerings at the specialty box office.

And not only did they manage a stellar domestic debut - the team made more than $280 million overseas.

That puts the movie in 6th place on the all-time opening weekends for May.

In the North American market, "Guardians 2" accounted for almost 80 percent of the weekend's top-10 gross, according to Box Office Mojo, based on studio estimates Sunday.

"But other times, in the strongest moments - maybe through the words of Alice Cooper or Freddie Mercury, through Cronenberg films, or even in Chewbacca's growl, I experienced something deeper - the realisation that I wasn't completely alone". Gunn goes against the grain when it comes to the visual style of his movies, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has positively mesmerizing visuals with smooth camera movements made possible by the small size and versatility of the RED Weapon camera. Meanwhile, the Tollywood film Baahubali 2: The Conclusion took in another $3.2 million to bring its total gross to $16.2 million. The Fate of the Furious is tapping out in the low $200 million domestic and around $1.2 billion world-wide, well behind Furious 7's $353 million domestic and $1.5 billion global sales.

Bringing it all back to Disney, Beauty and the Beast posted $4.9 million to round out the top 5.

Make sure you catch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in theaters now!

In fourth was Pantelion s "How to be a Latin Lover", a comedy starring Salma Hayek, Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell and Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez, with $5.3 million in ticket sales.

But Fate of the Furious is performing so well overseas that it is overshadowing the USA box office.
