Here's The Three-Row SUV That Electric Startup NIO Wants To Sell In China Next Year

The Nio ES8, Nio's second model and first mass-market auto has been revealed at the Shanghai motor show.

William Li, NIO's chairman and founder said that the NIO ES8 is another statement of the company's vision and technical and manufacturing capabilities.

NIO has already proved the 1000kW EP9 hypercar is the fastest pure-electric auto in the world when it set a new electric vehicle lap record of 7:05.120 at Germany's Nurburgring back in November 2016. It's, err, a large, seven-seat all-electric SUV.

NIO's new production vehicle for the China market is called NIO ES8.

The full-size, all-wheel-drive ES8 SUV has electric motors at the front and and the rear. At over 196 inches (4978mm) long with a 118-inch (2997mm) wheelbase, its all-aluminium body certainly promises a roomy interior - if not one as high-tech or forward-looking as the Eve's. "From track to road, NIO continues to achieve major milestones every year".

NIO claims the manufacturing and supply chain that will produce the ES8 already is in place. It is a best-in-class product that showcases what is possible with electric vehicles.

It has racecar-like aero that means it can generate more than 2.5 lateral G. All the better for nabbing lap records around the Nürburgring and the Circuit of the Americas.

But each will be built to the client's specific tastes and each one will be capable of hitting 100km/h in 2.7 seconds, hitting a top speed of 313km/h and, in the right hands, lapping the Nürburgring Nordschliefe in seven minutes, 5.12 seconds, a world record for an electric vehicle.

Visit NIO from April 21 - 28 at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition in Hall 7.1.

NIO is a global start-up, designing and developing smart, high-performance, premium electric vehicles. Investors include Tencent, Temasek, Baidu Capital, Sequoia Capital, Lenovo, TPG and other world-renowned investment institutions.
