18 April 2017- A fire broke out in Braampark in downtown Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon

Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson, Synock Matobako, said fire and rescue personnel were now on the way to the scene.

The fire which started on the top floor of the building saw a cloud of dark smoke smouldering over the CBD.

"You can see that on the right side of the building the whole top floor has collapsed and we are a bit anxious about the structural collapse". Matobako confirmed that due to swift evacuation, no one was injured. "The cause of the fire is still unknown and an investigation will be done".

"The roof collapsed, the fire is out but there's a lot of hotspots underneath the tower". The problem is that the fire happened on the top floor which is not stable, so they will not be able to work until the site has been declared safe. "The ground floor wasn't damaged because they could extinguish the fire in time".

Initial images only revealed smoke emanating from the building's roof.

He asked not be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media. "If it hadn't been for our security guards‚ who alerted us‚ we would have been in serious trouble‚" said Selish Govender‚ spokesman for Forum One B.

Firefighters at the building after the fire.

Fire fighters say they were unable to put out the blaze immediately as there was no water from the fire hydrants around the building.

"There were workers on the top storey when the fire broke out".

Mass pandemonium and chaos followed the discovery of the blaze.

"I saw contractors. who had been working on the roof, running away". "There was dust before then", she said.

"What we know is that the Braampark is on fire".
