New Monopoly Pieces Chosen by Fans in 146 Countries

Monopoly debuted three new game pieces on Thursday.

"The eight tokens set to "pass GO" in the next generation of the MONOPOLY game are the Scottie dog, top hat, car, battleship, cat, T-rex, rubber ducky, and penguin tokens".

What do a penguin, a rubber ducky and a Tyrannosaurus rex have in common?

And if you're up in arms about your treasured thimble getting the boot, Monopoly-maker Hasbro gave you the chance to save it.

Back in January, Hasbro asked Monopoly players in over 100 different countries to choose between 64 tokens, including the eight current options as well as modern alternatives including a jet ski, a computer, a monster truck and, God help us, a hashtag.

The new standard tokens are: the Scottish terrier, T. rex, cat, race vehicle, rubber ducky, top hat, battle ship, and penguin. The rain boot piece got the least support.

Mr Monopoly needs a new pair of kicks, because the once popular Boot token - modelled after the working shoe of the 1930s - received just over 83,000 votes, and was ultimately booted from the game. Their thoughts ranged from outrage to apathy to general distaste for the game overall.

Instead, they're planning to take some time off and will not be part of the next generation of the MONOPOLY game. In the decades since, an estimated 1 billion people have weighed the merits of buying up utilities and railroads or trying to hit it big with Boardwalk hotels.

The results are in and the thimble, boot and wheelbarrow are out.

"The global Monopoly community has spoken", said Jonathan Berkowitz, senior vice president of marketing for Hasbro. The good news is that none of the proposed emoji tokens made the cut. "Personally, I've always especially liked the boot token, but I'm excited to move onto the T. rex".
