UConn recruit Megan Walker named Naismith Player of the Year

UConn women's basketball recruit Megan Walker was named the Naismith Player of the Year on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Walker was named the state's Gatorade Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and will find out later this week if she will be awarded the Gatorade National Player of the Year. Walker was surprised with the news by 2015 WNBA MVP Elena Delle Donne. Her team was trailing King's Fork High by 11 points in the second half of the Group 4A state championship game, but Walker scored Monacan's last 16 points and connected on the game-winner with 15 seconds left.

As a victor of the Gatorade National Player of the Year award, Walker is now one of six female high school athletes across the country in the running for Gatorade Athlete of the Year.

The No. 1 prospect in the espnW HoopGurlz Top 100, Walker averaged 25.9 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 1.2 assists per game this past season. In the summer, she played for Team USA in the FIBA U18 women's tournament, and the Americans won the championship.

Walker, who finished her high school career with 2,062 points, will play in the McDonald's All-American Game on March 29 at the United Center in Chicago.

Walker has maintained a 3.83 GPA in the classroom.

Asked for the title of her storybook season, Walker said with a laugh, "The Awesome Life of Megan Walker". "Her hard work makes it all look effortless".

"In November, the 6' 1" guard committed to play college basketball at the University of CT. "She represents everything that Gatorade Player of the Year has always stood for - a high-quality student-athlete both on and off the court - and she's very deserving of this honor". Her family had told her they were going to the game to celebrate her many accomplishments. She is also eligible to win one of twelve $10,000 spotlight grants for her organization of choice, which will be announced throughout the year.

This comes one day after Walker was named the victor of the 2017 Naismith Trophy, given to the top high school basketball player in the country. Including your team's final 16 points and the game victor?
