"That's what I want to see from Gorsuch".

This is a vote for a justice who will sit on the highest court in our nation for the next generation and decide cases that will touch every human being in this country.

Ms Feinstein made mention of the "unprecendented treatment" of Merrick Garland, who was former President Obama's nominee for Mr Scalia's seat.

Gorsuch's three-day hearing begins at 11 a.m.in the Hart Senate Office Building.

So far the Democrats have not given much of an indication that they'll do this. Alito Jr., also replaced Republican nominees.

"[Gorsuch] asked the class to raise their hands if they knew of a female who had used a company to get maternity benefits and then left right after having a baby", Sisk's letter read.

Meanwhile, Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein (California), the committee's ranking member, acknowledge the specter of the Garland nomination hanging over Gorsuch's hearing. Cory Gardner and Democratic Sen. "It's the type of acclaim we keep hearing from Democrats and Republicans in the legal community".

Gorsuch, a coolheaded and amiable conservative federal appeals court judge from Colorado, likely will try to engage members of the Judiciary Committee without being pinned down on specifics that could trip up his nomination to the lifetime post.

Gorsuch has not participated in a major ruling on abortion, but Democrats are aiming to cast his views on that issues and others as outside the mainstream. During Gorsuch's time at the Department of Justice under President George W. Bush, the DOJ argued that the president should have nearly no limit to their authority when it comes to national security, even when naming someone a combatant to be detained indefinitely.

This means that Mr Gorsuch would not be in a "swing seat", as Ms Perry called it. "Most Americans question whether we need a Supreme Court justice with the vision of Donald Trump".

"President Trump repeatedly promised to appoint someone in the mold of Justice Scalia", she said, "and that the nomination of Judge Gorsuch illustrates that he is a man of his word".

Senator Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, highlighted the American Bar Association's unanimous well qualified rating for Gorsuch, noting that Democrats have previously referred to the ABA's rating as the gold standard for evaluating judicial nominees. The hearing is the first step in the confirmation process. They describe Gorsuch as thoughtful, considerate and fair-minded. Even Mr Graham pointed out he has "never been disappointed" with Ms Kagan or Ms Sotomayor because of that. Dick Durbin. "Despite all of this, you are entitled to be judged on merits". Gorsuch's hearings begin on Monday, March 20. "'The committee simply must have materials fully documenting your role in important litigation about executive power during the administration of President George W. Bush'".

Congressional Democrats have been facing major pressure from the left, as the Times notes, to exact revenge for the Republicans' unprecedented obstruction of Garland's nomination a year ago, and it remains to be seen if they have the will to filibuster Gorsuch's nomination. The filibuster rule when invoked requires 60 of the 100 votes to advance a bill or nomination, contrasted with the simple 51-vote majority that applies in most cases.
