Dominion Virginia Power is reporting about 31,000 customers without electricity, with more than 18,000 customers affected in Northern Virginia.

"High winds throughout Dominion's service territory have caused widespread power outages", Dominion noted in a message to customers.

"In Virginia, about 9,200 customers were without electric service, as of 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, but the storm was still moving through the area", Appalachian Power's website stated. The National Weather Service noted wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour would down trees and cause power outages.

During the early morning of Wednesday, Boone County showed three power outages.

Another batch of showers and thunderstorms will move through Central Virginia Wednesday evening.

Dominion notes among its tips for power outages to stay away from downed power lines. Sometimes the scammer goes as far as tricking your caller ID with information that makes it look as if he's calling from the power company. False reporting delays restoration and can put people in harm's way, so please only report downed wire if you see it.
